Studying in South Korea — What You Should Know
Cost of Living
Monthly living expenses in Korea range from ₩500,000–₩1,000,000 (~$380–$760 USD) covering food, transport, and essentials. Dormitory costs are typically ₩200,000–₩400,000/month. Busan and Jeonju are significantly cheaper than Seoul.
Language
Korean (한국어) is the primary language of instruction. Most TWISE NEW partner universities offer Korean language courses for international students. Basic Korean (TOPIK Level 1–2) is required for enrollment in most programs. TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) exams are held globally.
Student Visa (D-2)
International students study on a D-2 visa. SkillBridge Global assists you through the entire visa application process. The visa allows part-time work (up to 20 hours/week during semesters, unlimited during vacations) after obtaining a work permit.
Part-Time Work
International students with a work permit can work up to 20 hours per week during academic terms and full-time during school vacations. Common jobs include restaurant service, tutoring, convenience stores, and campus jobs.
Healthcare
Korea has one of the world's best healthcare systems. International students are required to join the National Health Insurance (NHIS) — typically ₩60,000–₩80,000/month — which covers most medical expenses at a fraction of the cost.
Weather & Climate
Korea has four distinct seasons. Summers (June–August) are hot and humid; winters (December–February) can be cold and snowy, especially inland. Spring and autumn are mild and beautiful — popular for travel and outdoor activities.
